St George in Stowlangtoft sits high above the road as you drive through the village.
With a large area of grass and a few trees surrounding a bench to the side of the Church, and the village sign on the corner, this is a wonderful spot to pause a while.
The Church is large and the slope steep, hence the terrain rating being slightly higher.
One of the Badwell & Walsham Benefice Churches so don't forget to note down the bonus number!
Simon Knott certainly seems to have deep affection for this Church, that much is obvious from his descriptions on www.suffolkchurches.co.uk
St George is in the group of Great Churches and contains many treasures both inside and out.
A moving memorial to art critic Peter Fuller and his unborn son by sculptor Glynn Williams sits in the grounds, many medieval bench end carvings sit inside along with other historical delights. Explore Simon Knott's great Suffolk Churches website for more details and photographs, or simply pay a visit to this glorious Church.
St George is famous for its Flemish carvings, having been donated by Henry Wilson of Stowlangtoft hall. These were stolen in 1977 and remained missing until 1982 when they were spotted in Amsterdam by someone that knew of the Stowlangtoft theft. Although attempts to return these through legal battles were not successful, in 1982 a Dutch businessman negotiated their purchase from the owner, paid off the legal bills, and returned the carvings. Simon Knott notes that they are now alarmed so won't be going anywhere!
