[Fr] Au premier regard, vous ne verrez sans doute qu'une butte comme les autres. Pourtant, ce site a probablement été occupé depuis le Néolithique.
Avancée de terre naturellement défendue par des pentes abruptes, elle a été renforcée par des fortifications à l'époque romaine, puis au Haut Moyen-Âge où l'on pense que s'y dressait un château pourvu d'un donjon de bois.
On retrouve encore, sous la butte, des blocs gallo-romains, ainsi que trois fosses : un puits, un probable four à chaux et une troisième de fonction inconnue.
Attention : le camouflage n'est pas d'une solidité à toute épreuve. Soyez délicats :)
En montant, pensez à faire un petit détour pour admirer la Pierre aux Chevaux.
Située sous le site du Châtelet, cette roche remarquable surplombe le Vallon Saint Martin. Elle est donc le "chef du Val", déformé par la suite en "Chefval", puis "Chevau". On peut y déceler plusieurs gravures représentant des marelles (un jeu de société de l'antiquité), et une sculpture de tête d'aigle réalisée par un sculpteur local dans les années 80.
N'hésitez pas à traverser le Madon et à grimper un peu pour avoir une vue plus générale sur la pierre, et découvrir au passage plusieurs autres sculptures modernes.
[En] At first blush, one might think this is just another small mound. Yet, the place has probably been inhabited since the Neolithic age.
This point of land with steep slopes has been reinforced by artificial fortifications in Roman times. In the High Middle Ages, it is believed that there was a castle with a wooden donjon.
Along the bottom of the slope, you will find some gallo-roman stone blocks, and three pits: one well, one probable lime kiln and a third one of unknown function.
Caution: The camouflage is a bit fragile. Please be gentle :)
Just below the Châtelet area, you will find the "Pierre aux Chevaux". This jutting rock dominates the Vallon Saint Martin. It has been called the "chef du Val", which is old-fashioned French for something that is above everything else (here: the "Val"). Then, it was shortened in "Chefval" that sounds a lot like the French "cheval" (horse) and then its plural "chevaux". You will find several engravings on it, depicting antique alquerques (very old board games), and also the sculpture of an eagle by a local artists of the 80's.
If you cross the Madon River and climb a little bit, you will have a lovely view on the rock and see some other sculptures on the way.
