Please note Use of geocaching.com services is subject to the terms and conditions
in our disclaimer.
This is the second and third of my virtual caches intended to
entertain and educate visitors to my community. You will have to
get out of the car for these, but that is as difficult as it
gets.
PLEASE NOTE!! - The coordinates for this cache have changed just
slightly due to renovations. The new coordinates are...
N 42° 18.029
W 89° 37.199
The first cache is located in a small park that was the site of a
major event in Illinois' history. You will be looking for another
stone monument, which explains what happened here. To prove you
were here, send me an email and tell me who dedicated this site,
and on what date?
Now for your next points of interest. Look to the northeast, and
you can see the front of the present McNess company. Look down the
street to the south, and you will see a 7-story building of red
brick and white stone. This is the worldwide headquarters of the
Newell/Rubbermaid Corporation. (Many of the surrounding buildings
also.) And if you look over the roof of the building to the
southeast, you can see two towers of the former W.T.Rawleigh
Company, another maker of health care products. Freeport has been
the home of many other major companies in its past and present,
including Burgess Battery, Structo toys, Thermos grills, Kelly
Springfield tires, Micro Swirch, Fairbanks Morse, and Vitners
snacks. (Sorry, but I'm sure I'm forgetting some.)
While you are here, be sure to check out the bronze statue that
goes along with the monument. And if it is a hot day, be sure to
take a break at the business directly to the east. You'll love
it!!
The second cache is a new to town. And since you can no longer add
a 'virtual', I figured I would just tack it on here since it is on
the way to the final cache anyway. The coordinates for this one
are...
N 42 17.249
W 89 38.465
You'll know when you have found it, when you find yourself 'home'
in 'the friendly confines'. But just to make sure you're in the
right place, please tell me who is the umpire at the plate? (Look
up for the answer!)
Enjoy!!
