About Speke Station
Speke railway station was located on the East side of Woodend Avenue. The station opened in September 1852 and closed in September 1930. It was located half a mile north of Speke itself.
Speke station became extremely busy and from 1891 it had been quadrupled in size. In its post 1891 form there were platforms on the north side of the line, an island platform in the middle and a platform on the southern side of the track. The location of the island platform can still be seen. If you look over the east side of the bridge you can see were the tracks widen and the island would have been. The main entrance to the station was a single storey street level building located on the north side of the line. From the entrance a covered footbridge spanned the tracks. On the southern side of the line it connected to another building that was also at street level. The footbridge connected all of the platforms which all had single storey buildings with roofs. The northern platform was served by fast trains heading out of Liverpool. The north face of the island platform was used by trains on the fast line going towards Liverpool and the southern face of the island was used by trains out of Liverpool on the slow line. The southern platform was served by slow line trains into Liverpool.
Little development had taken place around Speke Station and by 1930 the station was quite isolated. By 1930 Speke was served by buses and Hunts Cross station was better placed to serve new residential developments. For that reason Speke Station was closed in September 1930. Its platform level buildings were demolished shortly afterwards. It is likely that the platforms would have been demolished by the end of the 1950s when works had begun on electrifying the line through Speke.
The lines are still in frequent use today for both passenger trains going cross country and freight trains serving Garston docks.
Parking can be found a bit further down Woodend Avenue in the housing estate please do not block driveways etc. Sorry but this cache cannot be reached from a wheelchair or by geokids.
