Established in 1857, Union Cemetery is the oldest Kansas City cemetery still in operation today. It's 55,000 permanent residents include everyday citizens, artists, politicians, and veterans of every U.S. war. Monuments here include the burial site of artist George Caleb Bingham, a memorial for fifteen Confederate war prisoners who died in Kansas City, and a thousand Civil War graves. When the cemetery was created it was located well outside Kansas City and intended to serve the towns of Kansas and Westport for centuries to come. Today the cemetery is promoted by the Kansas City Parks & Recreation Department as a historic site. Sitting on a large wooded hillside overlooking the modern skyline, it is a frequent favorite of walkers and joggers -- providing a quiet, peaceful, and educational place to get away from the noise of the city.

If you get there and the main gate is locked, never fear! Fellow cachers have found a secret dog gate that you can use to get in. Word of warning, it's only slightly more than a foot wide! The coordinates are: N39 04.583 W94 35.012. Thanks to leannekc and battleskunk for this information!
