Svalbard Museum is located in Longyearbyen, in the Svalbard Science Centre that also houses the University Centre in Svalbard (UNIS) and the Norwegian Polar Institute.
It is a museum about the natural and cultural history of Svalbard and the Arctic. The collections consists of items, photographs, art and books, and includes more than 3 500 registered items. Items from other collections are also located here, in total more than 40 000 items. The museum is working to register all items in all collections on the archipelago in a common registry.
The museum opened in 1979 but was until December 2005 located in an old pig barn close to the church. In April 2006 the new museum opened in the Svalbard Science Centre.
There is a museum shop selling books, maps, postcards and souvenirs.
The museum is open every day of the week from 10.00 to 17.00 in the period February to September and from 12.00 to 17.00 the rest of the year. Closed during Norwegian holidays.
