Geocache Description:

This cache is placed in the Riserva Naturale Bosco della Ficuzza.
Rocca Busambra is the highest peak in the chain of Sicani Mountains and the highest peak in western Sicily. 15 km of several peaks (from west to east: Pizzo Nicolosi, Rocca Argenteria, Rocca Ramusa, Pizzo Busambra, Pizzo Casa), it looks like a ridge that rises over the green hills of the Ficuzza woods. The peak is very uneven, especially in the northern side, with vertical walls and overhangs of impressive height. The southern slope descends more gently. The peak offers a wide 360-degree panorama on a large portion of the valley and on the surrounding area.
An important place are the Niviere, large ditches cut into the rock to preserve the snow, that was then brought to Palermo through the old railway, for the “sorbets”of the noble houses.
This cache is placed at Alpe Cucco and it is an invitation to explore Rocca Busambra: the path that leads to the Earth Cache GC60XQY will take you closer, at the base of the climb. To reach the top there is a significant hike: do it if you are well trained and equipped.

Questa cache si trova nella Riserva Naturale Bosco della Ficuzza.
Rocca Busambra è la cima più alta della catena dei Monti Sicani, nonché il rilievo più alto della Sicilia occidentale. Il complesso, articolato lungo una dorsale di 15 km costituita da più rilievi (da ovest a est: Pizzo Nicolosi, Rocca Argenteria, Rocca Ramusa, Pizzo Busambra, Pizzo Casa), si presenta come una cresta che si erge sulle verdi colline del bosco della Ficuzza. Il rilievo appare molto frastagliato, soprattutto sul versante settentrionale, con pareti verticali e strapiombi di impressionante altezza. Il versante meridionale digrada invece più dolcemente. Dalla vetta si gode di un ampio panorama a 360° che abbraccia un’ampia porzione della vallata e del territorio circostante.
Un punto importante sono le Niviere, grandi fossati ricavati nella roccia per conservare la neve, che poi veniva portata a Palermo attraverso la vecchia ferrovia, per le sorbetterie dei salotti nobili.
Questa cache è situata all'Alpe Cucco ed è un invito a esplorare Rocca Busambra. Il sentiero che conduce alla Earth Cache GC60XQY ti porterà più vicino, alla base della salita. Raggiungere la vetta comporta una camminata significativa, da fare se si è ben allenati ed equipaggiati.
