This cache is placed in the Riserva Naturale del Monte Cofano.
San Giovanni Tower can be reached through a beautiful trail along the rocks on the slopes of Monte Cofano. The Tower was an important military place. It was built in 1595, after a careful study of the area, for the defense of the coast. At that time, the defense of the Sicilian coast was a very serious problem for the Spanish kings, who were concerned in particular by the raids of the Turks. San Giovanni Tower was part of a system of towers connected to signal in advance the attacks of the enemy. It is possible to go into the tower and have a wonderful view from the top on the Cornino Bay.
Notice: you need to pay a ticket for the access to Monte Cofano Reserve: 2€ full ticket, 1€ reduced ticket (groups), free ticket (children under 10 years).

La Torre di San Giovanni è raggiungibile attraverso uno splendido sentiero lungo gli scogli alle pendici del Monte Cofano. La Torre era un importante presidio militare. Venne costruita nel 1.595, dopo un attento studio del territorio, per la difesa costiera. Infatti, in quel periodo, la difesa della costa siciliana rappresentava un problema molto serio per i re spagnoli, preoccupati in modo particolare dalle scorribande dei turchi. La Torre di San Giovanni faceva parte di un sistema di torri collegate per segnalare con anticipo gli attacchi nemici. E' possibile accedere alla torre e godere di una vista panoramica sulla baia di Cornino.
Attenzione: l'ingresso alla Riserva è a pagamento: biglietto intero 2€, biglietto ridotto 1€ (gruppi e residenti), ingresso libero per bambini fino ai 10 anni.
