The ancient church was made collegiate in 1287, but was annexed in 1531 to the college at Brecon. The present church is a handsome edifice, in the early English style, with a spire.

St David's was rebuilt in 1841 by the vicar, the Rev. Joshua Hughes, on the foundations of a much earlier church. At the cost of £1,400. This church is grade II listed building.

The present church, which consists of nave and chancel with western spire and north porch, was consecrated by Bishop Thirwall, on the 8th December 1843. It took the place of a "neat plain building, consisting of two aisles without either tower or steeple, having a small belfry placed over the west end for the reception of two bells; it was divided internally by pointed arches and a massive octagonal column'' (Lewis, Top. Dict. Wales, ed. 1833). It is stated that the finial of the spiral is out of one of the stone supporters of the cross that stood in Llammas Street, Carmarthen, opposite the entrance of the Friary. It lay for years near the conduit by the entrance to the Old Plough yard. Bishop Thirwall and devoted by him to it's present purpose, is that to which was fixed the stake at which Bishop Ferrar suffered in 1555. (Bishop Ferrar was burnt at the stake in Carmarthen town). In the floor close to the south wall at the west of the church is a broken sepulchral slab which was discovered in the church yard some years ago. It bears a shaft, probably that of a cross, carved in relief, it has no inscription. It is of the period circa 1300, and may be the superincumbent slab on the tomb of bishop Beck (d.1293), the founder of a college of preists at Abergwili. (3rd October 1912).

Bishop Richard Davies (d. 1581)the translator of a portion of the old testament into Welsh, was buried in this church. "The simple stone which had been placed over the grave was unnecessarily broken in pieces on the occasion of erecting the present building". The present mural tablet to the bishops memory was set up by the bishop Thirwall around 1850.

The previous church was said to have been dedication to St Maurice, probably a Norman impostion which did not last very long, as the church termed 'ecclesia sancti David De Abergwily' in a ratification of several churches to the priory of Carmarthen By king Richard II, July 1395. Nothing of the original church remains.
