Aros Castle

Across the bay, look out for the beautiful remains of Aros Castle.

Over time, the castle became a ruin, but land around it was farmed. 1756 saw Duncan Campbell renting the farm for £110 yearly. A head count held by the Duke of Argyll in 1779 showed 57 people living around the area now known as Aros Mains.

So as you relax watching the castle, remember that folk have been enjoying the view for hundreds of years!

Aros castle was probably built by one of the MacDougall Lords of Lorn in the 13th century (over 700 years ago)!

Columba’s Rock

Born in Ireland in 521AD, St Columba came to spread Christianity over Scotland. St Columba settled on Iona and came to Mull, often to preach on the rock across the road from the location of the geocache. The rock is known locally as Columba’s Rock. You might notice the rock when you are waiting for the bus!

The Mute swans of Salen bay

Swans can be seen throughout the Island of Mull. Adult swans range from 140 to 160 cm long.Baby swans are called cygnets and there are usually,3-4 in a group.Overall, they don't make very much noise, especially, when comparing them to other native swans such as trumpeter swans.
