Before the new Breakwater Bridge was completed in May of 2012, Breakwater Road (now called Gundog Lane) was once an essential crossing of the Barwon River, carrying around 20,000 vehicles each day. The old bridge is in a flood plain and when it rained heavily it needed to be closed forcing traffic through the centre of Geelong and causing delays for drivers.
The height restriction also meant that trucks bigger than 3.7 metres could not fit under the Melbourne-Warrnambool rail bridge, requiring most trucks to go the long way round.
Since the completion and realignment of the new Breakwater Bridge and road it has now been reduced to a 'NO THRU ROAD' and renamed Gundog Lane
Traffic on this road now is virtually none, and is now the only access to the Dog Obedience and Rifle Clubs.
The new Breakwater Bridge is 12 metres higher than the original bridge, and at its lowest point is able to withstand a 1 in 20 year flood. In addition, larger trucks can now travel this route, thus reducing the number of heavy vehicles going through the centre of Geelong.
