Geocache Description:

Agricultural history in Frontier County.

Cache is on private property. Landowner permission has been obtained. If the road is wet, you will want to stay on county gravel road and walk the last 1/4 mile.

This is the site of the first irrigation well in Frontier County, drilled in 1946. The original well was replaced with a new one just a few years ago. The original hole was drilled with a very crude piece of equipment that couldn’t penetrate stand stone and was only about 80’ deep as a consequence. The new well is closer to 180’ deep.

Both Curtis Creek and Medicine Creek have been straightened, old creek beds were filled in and the trees removed here and west of Curtis Creek to make good sized fields to farm. All done with horse power and hand tools. The original path of Curtis Creek went south east from this point instead of straight south as it does now. The original creek beds were winding and very shallow, instead of deep as they are now. Irrigation was done with ditches, siphon tubes and checks instead of the gated pipe and pivots of today.
