Geocache Description:

Village signs is a series of caches based on the ornate signs that depict the heritage, history and culture of the villages that put them up (normally on the village green!).

The signs can be made of different materials from fibreglass to wood, from forged steel to stone. They can depict anything from local industry to historical events. The tradition probably stated in Norfolk or Suffolk and has now spread across most of the country so we thought we would base a series on them.  The series was started by our good friends Smokeypugs and has become far reaching in the UK from on in Scotland down to one in Devon and a fair few in between.

The Histon Village sign shows ducks and the brook. The churches although only St Andrews survives now.  A percheron horse as these horses were first brought to this country from France by J Stanley Chivers after the First World War.

It also shows the famous Histon Giant who was seven feet tall and carried a stone to the carpark of the local Public House.

At the bottom is a strawberry and strawberry leaf as the Histon strawberrys are the foundation of the famous Chivers Strawberry jam.

The cache can be found at the following coordinates

N52 15.ABC E 000 06.DEF

All information can be found on the plaque on the village sign.

  1. The Histon Giant live from AB01  to 18D0.  In 184C the giant carried a stone
  2. How many flying birds are there E
  3. The village sign was placed in 19F0

If anybody would like to expand this series please do. I would just ask that you let Smokeypugs know first so they can keep track of the Village Sign numbers and names to avoid duplication.
