The Elbe Hills State Forest with it's Nicholson Horse Trail System offers miles of trails off of it's little used roads. The Washington Department of Resources manages the land and invites hikers, riders and bikers to enjoy a visit. Remember your Discover Pass.
Many people are familiar with the Mt Rainier Scenic Railroad at the upper end of the lake at the little town of Elbe. Take a ride with the steam locomotive or the old diesel engine up to picturesque Mineral Lake and then explore around the old railroad equipment. After the train ride head up to a nice overlook of the lake and the valley down below at the end of your trip to this cache. The gate may be closed at the turn off from highway 7 just north of Elbe allowing you to proceed on foot to the cache location.
2016 was the 100th anniversary of the National Park Service, and to celebrate, Visit Rainier and WSGA hosted the Visit Rainier Centennial GeoTour - 100 caches placed in and around Mount Rainier National Park. The geocaches highlighted the rich history, scenic wonders, quaint communities, and hidden gems of the Rainier region. Participants received geocoin and pathtag prizes for finding all the caches.
