Geocache Description:

A very interesting cache for those who like a little bit of history as a motive to seek out a cache in the middle of nowhere!

The cache has been moved whilst the bridge undergoes maintenance as its in a dangerous condition. I hope that the temporary replacement meets your challenge You cache entirely at your own risk

The Newbold Round Is a series of 11 caches around the village of Newbold Verdon.
2 great caches by Pat and Peter are now within the circular trail of approximately three and a half miles making it a series of 13
Church Micro 3374 Newbold Verdon –St. James, GC46HMR _
Church-Micro- 3377Newbold Methodist, GC46J2W /
Walking is fairly easy public footpaths, tracks and short sections of road, flat but with a few boggy areas in places.
There are a few areas where dogs need to be kept on leads [sheep/cattle]
This is my first series of caches; most of my previous caches have been of an ‘extreme’ nature but having had a knee replacement late February 2015 I set this up as part of my convalescence.
All were placed whilst still on elbow crutches!

This was the first location I found as suitable for a cache in my locality - the bridge itself is a little over designed for its purpose and very well built.

I clambered underneath out of curiosity and realized that indeed this was not your regular construction

Not Jerry built but of Italian construction.Underneath is an inscription that was drawn in the wet mortar flaunching

'1944 IPOW SQAD 23 1944'

Clearly it was built by prisoners of war , probably after the Italians pulled out of the war earlier that year.

I know there were a number of Italian POW camps around [ Leicester the nearest} but have no further information.

Does anyone else have any historical knowledge about this location?

The Cache name is not only obvious but it was the name of my first cache find in 2007 [now archived]

The cache is located on the same side of the bridge as the barbed wire fence and also on the same side of the river as the fence. It’s not an easy climb , especially in wet weather hence the grade. Do not dislodge the large stone.
