How Geocaching Works

Geocache Description:

This is a short yet difficult walk in the garden county of Wicklow, you will be guided along the way using this Wherigo. The guide in the Wherigo will lead you along the highlighted route on the map to GC43, then directly to the summit and the geocache. Obviously this is a rare cache type so will assist people with their cache types in a day challenge.

In this cache, you will be guided along the path by a guide to Europe's First GC43, and from there you will directly ascend Bray Head. This walk is not easy on a dry day, so in wet and/or windy conditions, it is very difficult hence the terrain rating.

There is a codeword in the geocache log book (just inside the cover) that you will be asked for by the guide. He will only then give you your completion code so you can unlock on Wherigo.com so make sure you keep note of this code!!!
Then if you want, he can then lead you to the final stage of the The Old Eagle's Nest Letterbox cache as you will pass it on your way back down. This will also help you with your various cache types!

As there are several geocaches on the way, try use 2 separate devices if possible such as a Phone for the Wherigo and a GPS for the caches on the way. I strongly suggest that you work out the final coordinates for
#3 A History of Bray: The Victorian Promenade
as the final is near the start of this cache.
You can search for all the caches in the nearby area using the following link:

I have found that GPS devices are not much use at Wherigo's as the map is not accessible when using Wherigo. I have tested the program on the app from android and on a GPS. I preferred the Android as the location map was accessible while the program ran and you can see where you need to go next.

How to use a Wherigo?

As this will be most cachers first Wherigo cache, go to the Wherigo FAQ Link

When you get your completion code, you only need the first 15 letters so do not enter the LAST THREE digit when entering, there is an error that can not be fixed in the programming.

"Coillte promotes the Leave No Trace outdoor ethics programme as the code for recreation users of all its forest properties."

Do not start the trek without all the proper mountain rain gear, waterproof boots and the guidance material, compass, map, GPSr with mapping etc.

Please note that all parts of this cache are hiked at your own risk. The cache owner takes no responsibility of any sort for any reason including accidents or mishaps.

Please be aware that cars parked in areas close to walking trails are vulnerable and they can be vandalised or stolen. Unfortunately this is an ongoing problem which is extremely difficult to solve, so there is a risk involved. I have heard recently that many hiker groups are parking at the nearest population centres and getting taxis to and from the start points at very little expense.

Please observe the country code to the best of your ability. Local landowners often generously allow access to upland areas across or through parts of their private property. Please, please be conscious of this and return the courtesy by keeping all gates closed, immediately and not on your way back!. Please use the gates where appropriate but if you have to climb over them then use the hinged side ONLY.
Please do not cause any damage of any sort to fences or barriers along the way.
