De Vijfhoek is een zeer gewilde woonbuurt in het centrum van Haarlem, met kleine straatjes, leuke kroegen, bijzondere winkeltjes en het mooie Nieuwe Kerksplein. In het verleden was dit wel even anders. In de 16de eeuw nog lag het grootste deel van de wijk in de as na de grote stadsbrand. Daarna werd de buurt het domein van de Vlamingen en de textielindustrie die zij naar het Noorden brachten. De lakenindustrie bloeide in de wijk, maar de armoede en stank heerste er ook. Een van de hoogtepunten qua architectuur is de Nieuwe Kerk, een meesterwerk van Lieven de Key (toren) en Jacob van Campen (kerk).
The “Vijfhoek (Pentagon) is a popular residential area in the center of Haarlem, with small streets, cosy pubs, specialty shops and the beautiful New Church Square. In the past this was rather different. In the 16th century the largest part of the district was still in the ashes after the great fire. Afterwards the neighborhood was the domain of the Flemings and their textile industry which they brought up to the North. The textile industry flourished in this particular area, but poverty and stench prevailed here. One of the highlights in terms of architecture is the New Church, a masterpiece of Lieven de Key (tower) and Jacob van Campen (church).
