You can find real rocks very rarely in the South-Transdanubian Hilly Countries (Zala, Zselic, Tolna). This cache shows you such a place.
You can find real rocks in the Zala Hilly Country – but it is true these occur rarely. One of these places is the Nagybakónak sandstone ravine. Be careful on the edges of the ravine and especially be precautious because of slippery ladders on rainy days. The hills of Zala Hilly Country consist of clayey-sandy sediments of one-time Pannonian sea – we say „yellow soil”. The soft yellow earth settled a few million years ago to form a very thick layer. In the depth sandstone layers have come into existence here and there , where carbonates precipitated from the subsoil water and the carbonates sticked together the quartz sand grains under high pressure. The sandstone can be found where the erosion removes the soft earth.
