The parish of Carleton St Peter lies in south-eastern Norfolk in the valley of the River Yare; the parish is south-east of the city of Norwich and roughly midway between Norwich and the market town of Loddon. The parish lies just off the grazing marshes of the Yare flood-plain on ground which is above flood levels but is still only 7 metres above sea-level. The parish has very elongate shape with a mixture of marsh and arable lying in a strip from the river to the main Norwich to Lowestoft road.
St Peter's church is a typical Norfolk Perpendicular affair but also a very late example of the fashion. The church is isolated in a rough graveyard with views across a small valley towards the broader valley of the Yare. Much of the church dates from the early 16th century but there are features which indicate that as normal an older building has been re-used.
