Geocache Description:

This is a simple cache on the former site of Washington Irving Elementary School, which was damaged during a flood in 2008. One may feel exposed while looking for this one, as this is now open green space in the middle of town. Short people may have a hard time accessing the cache, but there is no need to apply excessive force to access the log book. This is a dual purpose container, so if you scare away some local denizens, don't panic. They will come back.

Washington Irving Elementary was the school for 5th and 6th grades in Waverly until the Summer of 2008 when the Cedar River flooded its banks. The dry run filled with water and also flooded the surrounding area. Following the flood the students were relocated to temporary classrooms in the strip mall on the west end of town. In 2009, the city approved the building of a new middle school for 5th through 8th grades near the current high school building. The middle school building was completed by Fall of 2011 and classes have been held there ever since. This area was demolished and replaced with green space. There are plans for an expansion of the dry run to allow for more flood space as well as a recreation trail.
