São Paulo ingressou por completo no século XX em fevereiro de 1922, com a Semana de Arte Moderna. O cenário que atualizou a cidade com as vanguardas estéticas mundiais fora inaugurado onze anos antes e brotou das pranchetas do Escritório Técnico Ramos de Azevedo, criado em 1886. A praça que abriga o Teatro Municipal chama-se hoje, com justiça, Ramos de Azevedo. O engenheiro civil e arquiteto formado na Universidade de Gand, na Bélgica, em 1878, foi, ao lado de Paula Souza, o líder dos primeiros anos da Escola Politécnica - e marcou o centro de São Paulo com a elegância de seus traços.

São Paulo joined altogether in the twentieth century in February 1922 with the Modern Art Week. The scenario that updated the city with global aesthetic vanguards out opened eleven years before and sprang from the drawing boards of the Technical Office Ramos de Azevedo, created in 1886. The square that houses the Municipal Theatre is called today, with justice, Ramos de Azevedo. The civil engineer and architect trained at the University of Ghent, Belgium, in 1878, was, along with Paula Souza, the leader of the early years of the Polytechnic School - and marked the center of São Paulo with the elegance of his features.
