Esta é uma das mais antigas paróquias da Madeira, cuja criação remonta aos anos de 1438/40, ao início teve duas capelas, uma na margem esquerda da ribeira do Caniço, dedicada a Santo Antão, e outra na margem direita, da invocação do Espírito Santo, porém, ambas tinham o mesmo pároco, o Padre José Lomelino Barreto, que lá paroquiou por mais de 40 anos. O pároco ofereceu o terreno para a edificação da actual igreja, sucessora das outras duas que se arruinaram.
A primeira pedra da actual igreja foi benzida em 2 de Agosto de 1779, sendo a nova igreja benzida em 28 de Outubro de 1783. A igreja caracteriza-se por uma arquitectura de transição entre o barroco e o rococó, apresentando uma planta longitudinal e nave única, fachada principal em empena de cornija, com portal de cantaria com arco pleno, encimado por janelão com as armas reais.
A grande torre sineira, devido às suas ampliações, quase não tem paralelo na região, destacando-se perfeitamente em toda a paisagem do amplo vale do caniço.
O interior apresenta talha branca e dourada, podendo observar-se pinturas de Nicolau Ferreira.
À noite a torre da igreja encontra-se iluminada de azul.

This Is one of the oldest parishes in Madeira, it’s creation dates to the years of 1438/40, at the beginning it had 2 chapels, one on the left side of Caniço “river”, dedicated to Santo Antão, and the other on the right side, dedicated to the holy spirit, however, they both had the same priest, the priest José Lomelino Barreto, that gave mass there for more than 40 years. The priest offered the lands for the construction of the new church, that took the place of the other two that ruined.
The first stone for the new church was thrown on the 2nd of August 1779, and the church was finished on 28th November 1783. The church has a transition architecture between baroque and rococo, having a longitudinal plan and a single nave, main facade gable cornice, with an arched stone portal, topped by large window with the royal arms.
The big bell tower, due to the expansion, has no comparison in the island, highlighting seamlessly across the wide valley of Caniço.
The interior features white carved and gilded, where you can observe the paintings of Nicolau Ferreira.
At night you can see the tower bell lightened in blue.
