Geocache Description:

The cache is a 35mm film canister

This is a traditional cache placed (with permission from the trust) in The National Trust’s historical demesne, Castle Ward.

Situated just outside Strangford, approx. 7 miles from Downpatrick in Co Down, Castle Ward is an 820 acre walled demesne with breathtaking views of Strangford Lough. It was a film location for the television series Game of Thrones and Frankenstein Chronicles.

As well as geocaching, you can explore the 18th century mansion, sunken garden and many trails that wind their way through atmospheric woodland, gardens and parkland.

The newly designed shared-use trail system is for walkers, bike riders and horse riders. For everyone’s safety, bike riders travel in one direction and horse riders travel in the opposite direction. This enables trail users to see horses and be prepared to pass them (staying left.) It's recommend that all users ‘Hail a Horse’ – speak to the horse rider, this will help reassure the horse. So please follow the directional signs.

When on the trails, pay attention to safety signs, Castle Ward is a working farm with cattle and sheep in many fields between April and November. At times you may find cows with young calves in the fields, they are protective of their young – do not come between them as this may be dangerous. Dogs should never go in fields with livestock.

You are advised to wear suitable footwear and clothing for walking, and please keep dogs on a lead at all times.

There are toilet facilities and a cafe in the stable yard and also toilet facilities behind the clock tower.

There is a charge for entrance to the estate, though it's free for National Trust members.

For opening hours (not every part of the estate is open all year round) and entrance costs, have a look at the National Trust's website : www.nationaltrust.org.uk/castle-ward/
