A traditional cache in a historic location
LOCAL INFORMATION
Fernhurst funance and the hammer ponds
In the 17th and 18th Centuries the Weald landscape was a very different place. The tranquility and beauty of the landscape today is a far cry from it’s industrial past focused around the iron industry. The raw materials found within the Weald made it an ideal location for this developing industry. The highly wooded landscape provided a rich source of charcoal to fire the furnaces that converted the local iron ore into cast iron, tools and cannons. The availability of water to provide the power to run this industry combined with the other resources to make this setting an ideal location. The remains of Furnhurst Furnace are some of the best preserved of all those in the Sussex Weald. More information about this important historical site can be found on the Furnhurst Furnace website.
