This church was probably built between the end of the third and beginning of the last quarter of the fifteenth century (1472 - 1480) by Martim Vaz counter, married to Isabel Botelho, (niece School Gonçalo Velho Cabral), nobleman who lived here with its people after having been selected by the King Afonso V in that position, the first to exercise it in all the islands of the Azores. .
Initially had plant and period style with chapels and altars invocations that its founder and other benefactors had the devotion, or are: the Chapels of Our Lady of the Snows Our Lady of the Rosary, San Diego, and the Ascencio Gonçalves invocation unknown today; and the Altars of Saint Kitts, Blessed Souls of Purgatory, the Good Lord Jesus and St. Anthony.
Between the late sixteenth and early seventeenth were carried out restoration work in the main chapel and sacristy.
By the year 1649 this temple found itself badly damaged, so his parishioners asked for The King John IV that reedificasse. In the absence of the monarch favorable order to effect continued until their degradation would fall to the ground in the early eighteenth century.
The interior is beautiful and richly decorated with rich gilded woodwork, which notes the Baroque of the first half of the eighteenth century in the tall pillars of the ships and the finest examples of the Altars of the main chapel, the Blessed Sacrament and Our Lady of the Rosary, with the the Sacred Heart of Jesus (ancient altar of San Diego), San Jose (ancient altar of the Lord Good Jesus), the Blessed Souls of Purgatory in the second half of the seven hundred of St. Anthony and St. Kitts the beginning of eight hundred. It stressed, however, that after its rebuilding remained the same invocations.
