Geocache Description:

The City Park GeoTrail (CPG) launches on Friday, May 22nd, 2015. The Trail consists of five (5) geocaches placed at points of interest within Hagerstown's City Park. Caches will be found at the parks museums as well as one other point of interest within the park. An untrackable token will be awarded to the first 900 geocachers who complete the City Park Geotrail!

To be eligible for the token, geocachers must have a CPG Passport. Initial quantities of the passport will be available at the Kick-off Event.

To claim a CPG token, geocachers must find and log all five (5) CPG geocaches, sign the cache logs, record the code word from each cache onto their passport, and have the passport verified at the City Of Hagerstown Parks & Recreation Department (351 N. Cleveland Avenue) or the Visitors Welcome Center (6 North Potomac Street). Please refer to the passport for complete validation instructions. Only ONE token can be claimed per Geocaching.com caching account for completing the trail and
NONE will be mailed out. This enables us to spread the most smilies to those who visit The Washington County GeoTrail. We appreciate your cooperation and hope that you enjoy the trail.

Participating in the CPG geotrail is fun and we hope that many people join in. However, it is not a requirement for logging your find on this cache once you find the container.

CPG - Hagerstown Railroad Museum & Engine 202

Located in City Park, the Hagerstown Railroad Museum features hundreds of signs, signals, bells, telephones and tools that were used by railroad workers every day. Most of the items in this significant collection came from the Western Maryland Railroad Company. Of special interest are an 1885 Pump Car and an 1875 Velocipede; both vehicles transported workers to rails or rail cars to make repairs.

The crown jewel of the museum is Steam Engine 202. This Locomotive was built in 1912 by the Baldwin Locomotive Works and it carried passengers and baggage between Baltimore and Hagerstown. It was retired in 1953. Totaling 77 feet in length, the engine weighs 415,000 pounds. Steam Engine 202 is the only Western Maryland road-type steam locomotive in existence.

In addition to the locomotive and its coal tender, eight cabooses are also on display.

The cache is a two-stage field puzzle. The supplied coordinates will lead you to the Hagerstown Railroad Museum & Engine 202. Using information obtained from the signage in the area as well as personal observations you will be able to determine the coordinates for the final stage. Stage Two is within walking distance of Stage One.

To navigate successfully to the final, you will need to solve for "ABCD".

The coordinates for the final are:

N 39º 38.ABC, W 077º 44.ADB

  1. The first digit of the number designation of the Western Maryland caboose = A.
  2. Steam Engine 202 is BB feet in total length.
  3. The first digit of the number designation of the Chesapeake & Ohio caboose = C.
  4. Admission fee for children 5 & Under = D.
