Geocache Description:

The City Park GeoTrail (CPG) launches on Friday, May 22nd, 2015. The Trail consists of five (5) geocaches placed at points of interest within Hagerstown's City Park. Caches will be found at the parks museums as well as one other point of interest within the park. An untrackable token will be awarded to the first 900 geocachers who complete the City Park Geotrail!

To be eligible for the token, geocachers must have a CPG Passport. Initial quantities of the passport will be available at the Kick-off Event.

To claim a CPG token, geocachers must find and log all five (5) CPG geocaches, sign the cache logs, record the code word from each cache onto their passport, and have the passport verified at the City Of Hagerstown Parks & Recreation Department (351 N. Cleveland Avenue) or the Visitors Welcome Center (6 North Potomac Street). Please refer to the passport for complete validation instructions. Only ONE token can be claimed per Geocaching.com caching account for completing the trail and
NONE will be mailed out. This enables us to spread the most smilies to those who visit The Washington County GeoTrail. We appreciate your cooperation and hope that you enjoy the trail.

Participating in the CPG geotrail is fun and we hope that many people join in. However, it is not a requirement for logging your find on this cache once you find the container.

CPG - Peter Buys Band Shell

A central feature of City Park, the Band Shell hosts summer concerts by the Hagerstown Municipal Band, local gospel singers, and serves as the venue for the Sunday session of the Western Maryland Bluesfest. City Park's original Band Shell, built in 1936, has been moved to Wheaton Park. The current Band Shell was erected in 1960, and is named for Peter Buys, conductor of the Municipal Band from 1920 to 1959. Park benches seat 250, and vistors are welcome to picnic on the open lawn area.

The Hagerstown Municipal Band performs at City Park every Sunday evening June through August. Concerts begin at 7:30 p.m. and are preceded by vesper services. Other performances at the bandshell include local gospel singers.

The cache is a two-stage field puzzle. The supplied coordinates will lead you to the Peter Buys Band Shell. Using information obtained from signage in the area as well as personal observations you will be able to determine the coordinates for the final stage. Stage Two is within walking distance of Stage One.

To navigate successfully to the final, you will need to solve for "ABCD". The coordinates for the final are:

N 39º 38.0AB, W 077º 43.8CD

  1. How many rows deep is the seating arrayed in front of the band shell? = A
  2. How many sections wide is the seating arrayed in front of the band shell? = B
