The greater part of the church you see here was built between c.1330 and 1400.
The church spire reaches a height of 185 feet.
The tower originally housed a peal of six bell the oldest of which is dated 1599.
There is currently a peal of eight bells which is regarded as one of the finest in the country.
The Church is where slave trader turned abolitionist John Newton – author of the hymn Amazing Grace – served as curate from 1764 to 1779. You can see a stain glass image of him at the church, as well as a representation of his ship in storm during which he converted to Christianity.
