Geocache Description:

This is yet another fun geocache on the official Houma Travel GeoTour. Travel less than an hour southwest of New Orleans and enter Louisiana’s Bayou Country – Houma!

Bordered by the bountiful Gulf of Mexico, surround by bayous and shaded by an endless canopy of moss-draped cypress trees. In Houma, you will find a rich and rare blend of nature that allows for an unimaginable mix of wildlife, found in a few places on earth. Download your passport to keep track of your progress.

Locate 20 or more caches to earn this geocoin (while supplies last).

The court square features several plaques that provide historical facts of the area.  The square is an impressive entry to the Terrebonne Parish Courthouse, c1938, fifth in a series builit on this site.  A historical plaque can be found in the foyer of this three-story art deco sytle building and a WPA mural by Robert Fuchs is located in the main courtroom on the second floor.

Built in 1840 as a men's club and later used as a private residence, the second story and wooden porch were built in 1916.  Johnny Folkes, one of the residents, was a legendary figure in Terrebonne Parish.  As a federal game warden, he was warned to stay out of Plaquemines parish or he would be shot.  He accepted the challenge and had a shootout with some of the people who were breaking the law there.   Several locals confirm he had a dog that howled to the song "Home on the Range".

The Folklife Center is an interactive community center dedicated to the preservation of Cajun Culture, heritage, tradition and folklore through unique cultural exhibits, performance, classes, and workshops. Live music on the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of every month from 5:30 p.m. - 7:30 p.m.

Please seal the container tightly and return to it's original hiding spot (Ammo Can).
