Border Crossing into Boquillas from the National Park - Visiting Rules for Border Crossing to Mexico

Normal Operating Hours are as follows:

  • Winter Schedule (November 2 - April 30) 5 days a week: Wednesdays through Sundays 9:00 am - 4:00 pm
  • Summer Schedule (May 1 - November 1) 4 days a week: Friday through Monday 9:00 am - 4:00 pm

I am sure there is more than one way to grab this find, but I am going to tell you exactly how I did it and then you can make up your mind how you plan to find it!  I made sure I had my passport and then went to Big Bend National Park in SW Texas.  Go to the Rio Grande Village Store and tell them you want to go to Boquillas. There is a river to cross, you can purchase a $5 roundtrip ticket at the store if you like. (that is what we did) Then you will go through the US border crossing station. (there is a nice bathroom here, hint hint) You walk down to the river and you will hear music and see the rowboat, that will be your "new ride to mexico"!   Once you arrive at the other side, you will have some options for getting the 1 mile into Boquillas (the town).  You can walk for FREE!  You can ride a burro round trip for $5! (this is what we chose, hence the cache name) You can ride a horse for $7 round trip. Your NEWLY FOUND friends in this country will send an escort with you if you choose to use their transportation.  Our guide was a cute 12-14 year old boy, who is happy to show you around the town, whereever you like to go.  They have a restaurant and a small tourist shop and they are ready for visitors.  There are also some little vistas and a few historic areas to walk around to.

As soon as you arrive in town, you will check in at the immigration station FIRST and fill out your paperwork and show your passport. It's a small trailer and your guide will lead you there if you need help, it's easy.  You will also go visit this place again when you are ready to leave Mexico to let them process your passport out.  They close at 4pm on both sides of the border, so don't stay out too late unless you are planning to spend the night in Mexico. (technically you will have 7 days, but we only stayed about an hour)

To find the cache, go through the patio of the restaurant to the back side of restaurant.  There is a nice lookout area over the river. Take the stairs DOWN to the GAZEBO LEVEL to find the cache. Right below the restaurant there is a big rock wall.  The cache was a bison tube, hidden behind a loose rock at the bottom of the wall, but the locals know about the cache and will help you find it if needed. They help maintain it and change out container if needed.  HINT:  SEE PHOTOS for EXACT LOCATION where I put it originally!  Original cache placement photo

I WANT YOU TO FIND THIS CACHE and I can't control how it gets moved a little each time it's found! ;)Feel free to replace container or log anytime that is needed. The most important part of this cache is having FUN and visiting another country!Be careful to leave yourself plenty of time to get back into the US before the crossing closes.
