På Als befandt der sig i alt 12.000 danske soldater, hvoraf størstedelen havde trukket sig tilbage dertil efter nederlaget ved Dybbøl. Danskerne havde bygget et net af løbegrave og kanonstillinger langs hele kysten fra Sønderborg i syd til Kær-halvøens spids Arnkilsøre i nord.
Den danske overkommando på øen tog for givet, at et angreb mod øen først ville ske efter nogle dages intenst bombardement. Danskerne ventede derfor ikke noget angreb midt om natten den 29. juni. End ikke de danske lytteposter, som lå i både ude i Als sund registrerede, at store preussisiske styrker trak ind i Sottrup Skov, for i ly af den tætte skov at bevæge sig frem til vandkanten.
Om natten den 29. juni satte 4 preussiske bådhold med tilsammen 2600 mand over Als Sund i 166 robåde og pontonfærger. Hovedstyrken startede fra Sottrup Storskov kl. 2:00 i 95 fartøjer og gik 10 minutter senere i land ved Skovfoged-huset på Arnkil og endnu et blodigt slag kunne tage sin begyndelse.
Denne wherigo tager dig en tur rund til krigergravene og mindestenene på Arnkil. De danske soldater der faldt under kampen om Als blev begravet af lokalbefolkningen, efterhånden som de blev fundet på markerne. Derfor er der så mange grave på Arnkil i modsætning til Dybbøl, hvor der er få, store fællesgrave. Gravene er blevet passet af lokalbefolkningen siden 1864.
Den største krigergrav med 64 faldne soldater ligger bag Rønhave. Turen går ikke forbi denne grav, men koordinatet ligger som interessepunkt.
Turen er 5-7 km og anbefales til fods.

On the island of Als were a total of 12,000 Danish soldiers, most of which had retreated there after the defeat at Dybbøl. The Danes had built a network of trenches and gun emplacements along the coast from Sønderborg in the south to the tip of the peninsula of Kær; Arnkilsøre in the north.
The Danish High Command on the island took for granted that an attack against the island would not happen after a few days of heavy bombardment. The Danes did not expect an attack in the middle of the night of the 29th of June. Not even the Danish listening posts, located on boats in Alssund, registrated that the large Prussian forces advanced into the forest of Sottrup, hidden in the dense forest, moving forward to the water's edge.
At night on June the 29th four Prussian teams of boats with a total 2,600 men set out to cross Alssund in 166 rowboats and pontoon ferries. The main force started from Sottrup Storskov at 2 pm. in 95 vessels and 10 minutes later they landed at Skovfogedhuset at Arnkil and another bloody battle could begin.
This wherigo takes you on a tour to the warrior graves and memorial stones at Arnkil. The Danish soldiers, who fell in the battle for Als were buried by locals, as they were found in the fields. Therefore, there are so many graves on Arnkil unlike Dybbøl, where there are few, large common graves. The local population has maintained the graves since 1864.
The greatest warrior's grave with 64 fallen soldiers lies behind Rønhave. This tour does not go past this grave, but the coordinate are listed as a POI.
