Background Information
The origin of this holiday's name is not clear, but it’s roots come from the United Kingdom. It is believed that in feudal times, the lord of the manor would 'pay' his workers with boxes of practical goods, that were distributed on the day after Christmas. In later times, employers continued this custom by giving servants a gift of money, or food, in a small box on the day after Christmas.
Still other stories tell of food and other leftovers being sent home with servants from Christmas celebrations in a box to their families. Food was also distributed from the church collection boxes, to poor parishioners. These traditions have believed to have evolved into the Christmas baskets (or bonuses), that employers give to their employees during the holiday season.
