Chenies has a long tradition of non conformity. During the Interregnum the parish church had a Presbyterian minister and there is written evidence of a Baptist meeting house in 1706. in 1773 a congregation of Particular Baptists leased a former orchard at the end of the village and the current Baptist Chapel was erected in 1779. It has since been much extended , particularly in 1799 when the front was removed and the building extended by 12 feet to the south west. It has been much as you see it now since 1850.
The village was until the 1950's owned by the Dukes of Bedford
