Another in our series of Church Micros in the South Wales area.
Not within the Church precincts, so please don't search in the grounds.
On street parking available nearby, area is overlooked so stealth will be required,
BYOP and tweezers.
St Thomas is an Anglican Parish Church built in 1886, it is built out of rock-faced squared stone with Bath stone dressings with a greenish slate roof by Thomas Nicholson of Hereford, at the expense of the Grenfell family of Maesteg House, Kilvey, and Taplow Court, Buckinghamshire, leading industrialists in Cornwall and Swansea.
It was built to replace an earlier structure that had fallen into disrepair and was situated on the sands in the area which is now known as "SA1" The nave was built in 1886 and the chancel in 1890 as a memorial to Pascoe St Leger Grenfell.
The broad spire is a landmark in the area and can be illuminated on request to mark special events.
The South Aisle was damaged by bombs in 1940 and was later repaired.
It is the Mother Church and St Stephens Port Tennant and All Saints Kilvey are its' two Sister Churches.
The funeral of 1970s singing star Alvin Stardust took place at the Church on the 5th of November 2014, his coffin was carried into the Church to one of Alvin's favourite songs, "When You Wish Upon A Star" from the Disney film Pinocchio, after the service 50 members of the Harley Davidson Owners' Club escorted the singer's coffin to Swansea Crematorium.
