Geocache Description:

Columbia Time Machine: Civil War Coin Trail Kickoff

Where: Cayce Tennis Center
When: February 7th
11:00am-12:30pm
The year is 1865 and the United States of America are divided in a civil war. Battles are fought throughout the states, but few states are as instrumental as South Carolina. This war is about to reach a major turning point, and that too centers around South Carolina. Union General William T. Sherman started his Carolinas Campaign in Savannah Georgia, and marched through Columbia South Carolina on his way to meet up with forces in Virginia. The Union troops fought Confederate troops along the way, which led to the burning of hundreds of houses, public buildings, bridges and other structures along the way. Perhaps the most devastating burning was right here in Columbia. With Columbia being a major symbol to the Confederacy, housing such important locations as the State House, the main confederate printing plant, and even the church where the original secession documents were signed, it was a major target on Sherman's march. They shelled the state house with cannons and burned many buildings through what is now downtown Columbia.

Fast forward exactly 150 years to the year 2015. While many were destroyed, there are still a great number of these historic locations still standing all throughout Columbia. We invite you to step into the Columbia Time Machine, and take a stroll through history to see some of these historic buildings, and walk in the footsteps of the Union and Confederate soldiers through the streets of Columbia. For those adventurers who choose to take this journey through time with us, there is a very special, limited edition, trackable geocoin to commemorate the 150th anniversary of this monumental event in South Carolina's history! The Historic Columbia Foundation is promoting and hosting a number of events throughout the next few months to remember this time in our state's history. This event will be the kick off to this geocoin trail, so please join us for some fun and history!

Before the coin becomes available to be earned by all time travelers, this event will be your first chance to earn one! We will be meeting at the Cayce Tennis and Fitness Center starting at 11:00am on Saturday February 7th. There will be some food and fun, and games and prizes to start things off right. Join us here to collect your "passport" and learn how to earn your limited edition geocoin. Then if you choose to, get started working on this historic trail right next to the tennis center along the new Timmerman Trail, which takes you right near the very famous Fort Congaree, the original location of Columbia!

Please make sure to log a "Will Attend" on this cache page as soon as possible, so we can plan accurately for this event. We look forward to seeing you all there in the future, and in the past!

Special thanks goes to the Columbia Regional Sports Council and Cayce West Columbia Chamber and the River Alliance for their support and permissions for this event and all related geocaches!

Quantities of the commemorative geocoin available through this trail are limited, and are on a strict first come first serve basis. There is no guarantee of availability for attendance of this event.
