Cette fontaine, installée en 1874, fait partie des aménagements confiés à Davioud par le Baron Haussmann à la fin du 19e siècle.
Ici Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux, inspiré par les œuvres des maitres italiens et leur gout du mouvement, choisit de représenter une allégorie des quatre parties du monde tournant autour de la sphère céleste illustrée des 12 signes du zodiac.
Par leurs positions, de face, de trois-quarts, de profil et de dos, les quatre femmes nues donnent une impression de mouvement encore augmentée par la posture des chevaux marins qui semblent jaillir de l'eau.
On reconnait une africaine, une américaine (indienne), une asiatique et une européenne. L'Océanie est absente, pour des raisons d'équilibre et d'harmonie de la composition.
Si on la connait comme la fontaine de l'Observatoire ou fontaine Carpeaux, elle fut en fait co-réalisée par 4 artistes aux talents variés, Louis Villeminot pour les guirlandes, Pierre Legrain pour le globe et Emmanuel Frémiet pour les chevaux, dauphins et tortues.
Tout comme le jardin du Luxembourg, les horaires d'ouverture du jardins des grands explorateurs ou est située la fontaine sont variables. En hiver, de 8h00 (9h le we) à 17h45 (ou plus tôt suivant l'humeur des gardiens !)
