Água Retorta, freguesia do concelho da povoação, é constituída pela Terra Chã, Lomba das Fagundas e Fajã do Calhau. O sector primário ocupa 65% do número de activos, num total de 496 residentes.
Esta pitoresca localidade fica a 75 quilómetros de Ponta Delgada, é, desde a abertura da SCUT para o Nordeste, a freguesia mais distante da cidade de Ponta Delgada.
O povoamento de Água Retorta deu-se em simultâneo com o de Faial da Terra, em consequência do desembarque dos primeiros povoadores na Povoação velha. Contudo, Água Retorta tornou-se importante dada a abundância de fazendas aí existentes. O nome “Água Retorta” provém “por respeito da água da fonte que pela rocha caí em voltas”.
Simon Rolán nasceu em Paris no Século 15. Quando novo após a morte dos seus pais herdara uma fortuna, que ao longo do tempo fora distribuindo pelos mais pobres. Tornou-se um monge franciscano e decidiu ir como peregrino até Santiago de Compostela. No caminho de regresso passou pela cidade de Salamanca, onde tomou conhecimento de uma imagem de Nossa Senhora que estaria escondida numa escarpada montanha. Simon recebera uma advertência divina para que descobrisse a imagem perdida nos tempos; “Simão, vela não durmas!” que passou a adotar o sobrenome de Vela, como ficou conhecido O local era chamado Penha de França, segunda a tradição Carlos Magno, Rei dos Francos e Imperador do ocidente, aqui teria combatido os mulçumanos e uma imagem de Nossa Senhora teria sido escondido para evitar a sua destruição pelos infiéis.
Após chegar ao local e durante a noite, enquanto dormia a Virgem Maria indica-lhe o local onde se encontrava escondida a imagem. A imagem foi encontrada a 19 de Maio de 1434. Em breve se tornou um local de peregrinação e uma ermida foi construída.
Este tipo de lendas e milagres era comum na idade Média. A retirada inicial dos cristãos face ao Islão e aos posteriores avances e recuos das fronteiras significa por vezes esconder em locais recônditos imagens sagradas com o temor de serem profanadas e destruídas pelo infiel.
A Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Penha de França foi edificada de 1871 a 1885, sendo a torre sineira existente uma reminiscência da ermida da mesma invocação, fundada pelo Capitão Pedro Barbosa da Silva, no século XVII. Esta igreja apresenta um bom trabalho em cantaria de basalto em alvenaria que foi pintada a branco. É de destacar os trabalhos em pedra feitos junto das portas, janelas e da torre sineira. O seu estilo segue o tradicional maneirismo existente em outras igrejas Micaelenses.
Segundo uma lenda, estando a ser construída uma igreja na Lomba das Fagundas, durante a noite as pedras aí colocadas, apareceram no local da actual igreja. Os habitantes entenderam isto como uma vontade divina e decidiram aí edificar a igreja no presente local.

Rolán Simon was born in Paris on the 15th Century. After the death of his parents he had inherited a fortune, which he, by the time, he decided to distribute among the poor people. The place was called the Rock of France. According to tradition, Charlemagne, King of the Franks fought against the Muslims here and an image of Our Lady would have been hidden here at that time to prevent their destruction by the infidels.
After arriving on the scene and during the night, while sleeping Rolán was told by the Virgin Mary the location where the image was hidden. The image was found on 19th of May, 1434. It soon became a place of pilgrimage and a shrine was built.
This type of legends and miracles were common in the Middle Ages. The initial withdrawal of Christians against Islam and the subsequent advances and retreats of the borders, caused sometimes the Christians to hide sacred images with the fear of being desecrated and destroyed by the infidels.
