During the Cold War, the US Government would try almost anything to gather intelligence on the activities of the KGB, the intelligence agency of the USSR. Some of those attempts did not go well for us. This recently declassified story documents one such scheme that, sadly, resulted in complete failure.
In 1961, a Central Intelligence Agency veterinary surgeon implanted a microphone and a small radio transmitter into a cat, weaving an antenna through her long fur. CIA agents planned to train the cat to approach suspected Soviet agents unnoticed so that the radio equipment could capture and relay sensitive conversations to the American agents nearby. This project was called Operation Acoustic Kitty, a top-secret plan to turn a cat into a cyborg surveillance machine.
Unfortunately, as cat people know, cats are not known for following directions, nor for their interest in national security. For its first official test, CIA agents drove Acoustic Kitty to a Soviet compound in Washington DC, and instructed her to approach two men sitting outside. Instead, the cat wandered into the street and was immediately run over by a taxi. Concerned that the project might be discovered by Russian agents, a CIA agent was dispatched the next day to recover the remains.
The program was finally abandoned in 1967 having reportedly cost as much as 25 million dollars. The Agency finally realized that cats do not make suitable spies.
The cats pictured below, although of various international origins, would make terrible spies. The cache will be found at N43 01.UVW W77 34.XYZ
