20. gadsimtu mijā Ludza tika dēvēta par Latvijas Jeruzālemi, jo tolaik Ludzā 59% no visiem iedzīvotājiem bija ebreji. Pilsētā bija 7 sinagogas. Uzraksti uz šiem kapakmeņiem liecina par Ludzas ebreju vēsturi pirms 500 gadiem. Ebreju skaits Ludzā, pēc 1935. gada tautas skaitīšanas datiem, bija 1518 cilvēku, t.i., 27% iedzīvotāju. Tomēr viņu loma pilsētas ekonomikā bija daudz lielāka salīdzinājumā ar citiem iedzīvotājiem. No 302 pilsētas veikaliem un darbnīcām ebreju īpašumā vai nomā atradās 191 uzņēmums, t.i., 63 procenti. Sākoties 2.Pasaules karam, 300–400 ebreju aizbēga uz austrumiem. Ludzā tika izveidots geto. Kopumā Ludzā bojā gāja 1200 ebreju, no tiem apmēram 150 bija bēgļi no citiem Latvijas apriņķiem un Lietuvas. ENG: In the beginning of 20 century Ludza was cold Latvia’s Jerusalem as 59% of all inhabitants of the town were jews. There were 7 sinagogs in the town. Inscriptions on these tombstones indicate Ludzas Jewish history 500 years ago. According to the 1935 population census, the Jewish community of Ludza comprised 1518 persons, i. e. 27% of the population. However, their role in the economy of the town was much more important, compared to that of other ethnic groups. Of the 302 shops and workshops in the town, 191, i. e. 63% were owned or rented by Jews. During the WW2 altogether approximately 1200 Jews were killed in Ludza, including about 150 refugees from Lithuania and other places in Latvia. Of the members of the Ludza Jewish community, who had remained in Ludza during the Nazi occupation, four people survived. There were also several unsuccessful attempts at rescuing Jews.
