Geocache Description:

The cache is hidden close to the ruins of St Nicholas Church half a mile from the village of Gasthorpe. It's an eerie and atmospheric place standing alone on a bridle path between the A1066 and Lodge Farm.

If you like looking around churches to see tombs and antiquities, this cache is not for you. There is little to see apart from a tower arising from a mass of vegetation. I haven't been able to find out when the church fell into ruins but it was a long time ago. It's not possible to park safely on the A1066 so drive into Gasthorpe village or rather hamlet. You can park near the phonebox, close to which you'll see the footpath sign which will take you to the cache. Don't drive along the private road.

Gasthorpe is interesting in that it's former name was Gatesthorpe and there is a strong possiblity that the Gates family originated from there before emigrating to the New World. Certainly there is written evidence that they lived in Coney Weston, two miles away.
