Le village de Cerisy-la-Salle est situé sur un mouvement de terrain qui domine les environs ce qui lui confère une importance tactique particulière. La commune est confrontée aux combats de la libération dès la nuit du 6 au 7 juin 1944 lorsqu'un bombardier Lancaster piloté par le Pilot-Officer Frederick James appartenant au 460 Squadron (No 1 Group, Bomber Command) et touché par la défense antiaérienne allemande et s'écrase sur les terres de Cerisy-la-Salle. 7 membres d'équipage (6 anglais et 1 australien) sont tués lors du crash.

On 6th June 1944 a Lancaster bomber was shot down in Cerisy-la-Salle. None of the crew survived. The pilot was Australian, the crew British. Each year, on or close to 6th June, there is a ceremony at the memorial to the crew. In 1994, to commemorate the 50th anniversary of D-Day, a monument was erected on the outskirts of Cerisy-la-Salle. The airmen are buried in the british cemetery at Bayeux. By the roadside at the village Bisson (along the valley road which runs south of the Chateau), you can see some remains of the plane.
