Wellington City Council, like many councils around the country, has invested a lot of time and money in new mountain bike and walking tracks in the last five to ten years.
One area that has received a lot of attention is Waimapihi Polhill Reserve. New tracks include Highbury Fling, Transient, Serendipity, Clinical and the newest track, Ikigai.
This cache is hidden on a track that is part of the Polhill Reserve Loop, a fairly steep 1.2km track that runs down a ridge from near the top of Transient to Aro Street, near the bottom of Transient and Serendipity. In the old days it was nicknamed Planet Ride; despite this early name, Planet Ride is (now) a pedestrian-only track - no bikes allowed! (Which is probably why you won't see this name on any signposts.)
Cache location
The cache is not at the published coordinates. To find the location of the cache, you will need to obtain two codes from each of other caches in this series, hidden on or near the tracks: Serendipity (a and z), Transient (b and y), and Highbury Fling (c and x). If you are doing all four at once, start at Aro Street and ascend via Transient, doing each cache in order.
Once you have the codes, go to the published coordinates (the intersection of Transient and Planet Ride), sit on the bench, and project the final location of ab.c degrees (true) at distance of xyz metres a[c+5].b degrees (true) at distance of x[z-6]y metres (updated May 2022)
(Concatenate the individual digits; mathematically, the solutions are 10a+(c+5)+b/10 degrees and 100x+10(z-6)+y metres.)
If your GPSr cannot do this for you, you may need to go away and get some help from the internet. If your GPSr cannot do tenths of a degree, don't worry – your calculation will only be out by a couple of metres; the hint will take you the rest of the way.
