Cette église, un peu étrange avec son unique et haute tour, a une histoire compliquée. Elle commence en 1180 par l'acquisition du terrain par les frère hospitaliers originaires d'Altopascio (Italie) qui vont donner le nom de "Haut Pas" à l'église.
A cette époque, ils construisent une simple chapelle, adossé à un hôpital sur le chemin de Saint-Jacques de Compostelle (voir la coquille sur le mur derrière le panneau d'information), puis leur ordre est supprimé en 1459 pour d'obscures raisons. En 1572 des bénédictins s'installent sur le lieu et construisent une petite église afin d'éviter d'avoir les paroissiens dans la chapelle. Alors que les maisons remplacent les champs, l'église devient trop petite, elle est donc agrandie. En 1630 on lui ajoute un chœur et son orientation est inversée. Le quartier est alors pauvre et les ouvriers viennent travailler bénévolement à la construction.
Entre 1756 et 1780, le curé de la paroisse est Jean-Denis Cochin, qui se soucie des malades indigents. Il fondera un hospice qui est devenu l'hôpital Cochin tout proche.
L'église est pillée à la révolution, puis devient le "Temple de la Bienfaisance" en 1797 pour redevenir catholique en 1801 suite au Concordat.
Depuis cette époque, seuls des aménagement intérieurs ont modifié l'église.
Ah oui, les pauvres n'habitent plus le quartier également !

The church is a little odd with its single high tower, and has a complicated history. It began in 1180 with the acquisition of land by the "frères hospitaliers" originating from Altopascio (Italy) who gave the name "Haut-Pas"(high passage) to the church. It became an important stop on the “The St James Way”. See the Scallop Shell on the wall behind the information sign.

The church was looted during the revolution, and became the "Temple de la bienfaisance (Temple of Charity)" in 1797. It became Catholic again in 1801 after the Concordat.
Since that time, only the interior has been changed.
