Lake Eildon Mystery Cache

This cache has been archived.

Clever Monkey: HQ has requested I remove all the geotour references from the cache page as the cache is no longer a formal GeoTour cache. This would seem fair to do however it ultimately creates a different cache so in fairness to those that came a completed the cache while it was a tour cache I am archiving it in its current form.

Thanks everyone it was a blast to host the first GeoTour in Australia.

Geocache Description:

Cache Information:

Cache #: 20

Location: Around Lake Eildon

Access: All Vehicles, 24/7

Additional Information:

Lake Eildon National Park is located in both the Shires of Murrindindi and Mansfield. The lake is larger than Sydney Harbour and is located on Victoria's longest major waterway - the Goulburn River. The lake was designed by the State Rivers and Water Supply Commission of Victoria and constructed by the US firm UTAH.

History:

Originally inhabited by Aborigines and first settled by white farmers in the 1830s, with the area being named 'Eildon' after Eildon Hills in Scotland. Eildon took part in the 1860's old rush and in 1926 the area above Eildon was flooded by the first dam (Sugarloaf) and in 1959 by the second larger dam (Big Eildon Project). In 1997 the 2,670 hectare Fraser National Park and the 24,000 hectare Lake Eildon National Park were combined into the Lake Eildon National Park.
