The building
Welcome to S:t Görans gymnasium (St. George's High School). The building is one of the best examples in Sweden of architecture following the principles of the Swiss-French architect Le Corbusier. The architect behind S:t Görans gymnasium from 1960, Léonie Geisendorf (April 8, 1914 - March 17, 2016), born in Poland and educated at ETH in Zürich, did an internship for Le Corbusier in Paris before moving to Sweden.
The building complex consists of a low horizontal base enclosing a courtyard on two sides and a vertical tower slab. The building displays many of Le Corbusier's founding principles of architecture. For instance, the building is elevated off the ground through the use of columns (pilotis). Also, notice how the stone sett paving of the court in front of the building continues behind the glass windows and becomes the flooring of the entrance hall, softening the transition between outside and inside. Other Le Corbusier features include non-load-bearing exterior walls, a free interior floor plan and, to top it all off, a roof-top gymnasium and basketball court, much like Le Corbusier's concept of the roof garden.
This former school building has recently been transformed into student housing.
