Start at The Market Tavern...or what is now a restaurant. The Market Tavern was a meeting place for farmers on market day, both an important social centre, but also where business was conducted and deals were done, outside of the official auctions. There are stories of people coming to Hereford, intending to go to the market but only making it as far as The Market Tavern, and, from an earlier era, of those so drunk they had to be put in their carts and their horses pulled them home, finding their own way. Find the number above the front door of the former Market Tavern. This is AB.
Walk down Newmarket Street with the road on your left until you come close to Next...or where the Poultry Sheds used to stand. You'll be standing close to Auctioneers Walk.
There were plenty of trees in the market, where the animals were shaded in their outdoor pens. As a nod to this, count the number of new saplings visible from this waypoint which are planted down the central reservation of Newmarket Street. This is CD.
Go along Auctioneers Walk and in to the centre of the development to reach the Coffee Cart Company, which is in close proximity to where another well know Hereford cafe stood, the Dean Leigh Temperance Canteen. This cafeteria was another place to get together on market day as an alternative to the pubs in that it was a dry establishment, set up by the Dean of the Cathedral. Its specialities included donuts. EFGH is when the coffee business was founded. There's no need to go inside for the clue, but if you do (you might be thirsty!!), you'll find some photos on the wall of the Old Livestock Market.
The last point is across the car park, to a wall besides Blackfriars Street, which has inlaid some stonework - 2 plaques and a coat of arms - from the old market. You are close to the site of the two sale rings, one of which was the Langford Ring, named for Aulderman EW Langford, Chairman of the Markets Committee, which was used for the sale of cattle, rams and horses. In what year was the stone laid: IJKL?
To find the final point, work out these co-ordinates.
