History:
Perfect Cure Creek ran through the property of early settler John Merlo. It was likely named by him after he found a 4 ounce nugget in the creek bed, when returning home from his mine known as the Solferino. John was born Giovanni John Merlo in Italy 1837, travelled to Australia 1861 and moved to the Alexandra district 1867, where he became known as a miner. In 1880 he found small amounts of gold in the Puzzle Ranges and dug a long mining adit into the side of the hill above Mountaineer Creek called the Solferino. The mine was very rewarding and helped him become well established locally. In 1883 John was awarded a selection of around 100 acres in the area now submerged by Lake Eildon, below Merlo Lookout.
