Academia Petrina

Atrodas Jelgavas centrā - Akadēmijas ielā 10. Tagad redzamā ēka (vēlais baroks, agrais klasicisms) tapa pēc Kurzemes un Zemgales hercoga Pētera Bīrona iniciatīvas laika posmā no 1773. – 1776. gadam (dāņu arhitekts Severīns Jensens) vietā, kur atradās hercogienes Annas pils. 1775. g. šeit tika dibināta pirmā Latvijas augstskola Academia Petrina (Pētera akadēmija, nosaukta tā dibinātāja vārdā), bet 1782. g. - izveidota pirmā observatorija. Krievijas impērijas laikā šeit atradās ģimnāzija. Starp tās beidzējiem ir jāmin tādi vārdi kā K. Barons, J. Alunāns, J. Čakste, A. Smetons u.c.1952. g. ēkā izveidoja Jelgavas vēstures un mākslas muzeju, kam 1975. g. piešķīra latviešu glezniecības vecmeistara Ģederta Eliasa (1887. – 1975.) vārdu. Muzeja ekspozīcija vēsta par pilsētas un novada vēsturi Kurzemes un Zemgales hercogistes periodā un pēc tā. Pie iespaidīgās ēkas novietoti četri Kurzemes hercogistes laika lielgabali un Ģ. Eliasam veltīts piemineklis (1987. g., tēlnieks I. Zariņš), kā arī tēlnieka K. Jansona darinātā pieminekļa Jelgavas atbrīvotājiem “Lāčplēsis un Melnais bruņinieks” fragments.

Academia Petrina

Jelgava History and Art Museum is located in former building of “Academia Petrina” built in 1773-1775. The new Baroque with influence of Classicism style image of the building was created by the project of Duke's Ernst Jochann Bieron court architect S.Jensen. Actually he used and rebuilt the former palace of Duchess Anna (posterior Russian Empress Anna Ivanovna) erected in 1718-1722. Peter Bieron the son of E.J.Bieron established the Academic Gymnasium as an university with 4 faculties. The first astronomic observatory in Latvia was housed in the central 35-m high tower till the 1919. This building was hardly damaged by the time of the 1st and 2nd World Wars and was repaired in 1927 and 1947-1951. Museum houses expositions on the Jelgava Appanage Local History for the period of Courland and Semigallian Dukedoms (1561-1795) and the history of Jelgava City. The museum also houses constant display of the paintings by famous Latvian painter Ģ.Eliass and memorial exposition "Visiting the artist", different thematic displays and events on art, history and culture topics take place in this museum. Four mighty cannons of the Courland Dukedom times and the bust of M.Elias by sculptor J.Zarins, 1987 are exposed at the museum building. At the Northern end of the house the part of the demolated monument to the liberators of Jelgava in the Latvian Freedom Fights in 1919.
