Geocache Description:

ENGLISH

In geomorphology and geology, erosion is the action of exogenic processes (such as water flow or wind) which remove soil and rock from one location on the Earth's crust, then transport it to another location where it is deposited. Eroded sediment may be transported just a few millimetres, or for thousands of kilometres.
While erosion is a natural process, human activities have increased by 10-40 times the rate at which erosion is occurring globally. Excessive (or accelerated) erosion causes both 'on-site' and 'off-site' problems. On-site impacts include decreases in agricultural productivity and (on natural landscapes) ecological collapse, both because of loss of the nutrient-rich upper soil layers. In some cases, the eventual end result is desertification. Off-site effects include sedimentation of waterways and eutrophication of water bodies, as well as sediment-related damage to roads and houses. Water and wind erosion are now the two primary causes of land degradation; combined, they are responsible for about 84% of the global extent of degraded land, making excessive erosion one of the most significant environmental problems world-wide.
Intensive agriculture, deforestation, roads, anthropogenic climate change and urban sprawl are amongst the most significant human activities in regard to their effect on stimulating erosion. However, there are many prevention and remediation practices that can curtail or limit erosion of vulnerable soils.

Fruga valley on the Island of Rab is filled with thick soil which is subjected to strong erosion and incision of trenches. The soil least resistant to erosion is a clayey soil with a large proportion of powdered elements that are easily releasable and transportable, which is the reason why erosive soils occur here on the island of Rab. On the exposed trench wall we can see some clayey soil underlain by fossil soils (paleosol) with traces of fossil roots.

http://www.tzg-rab.hr/ger/rab/geopark.php

  1. Procjena dubina rupe uzrokovane erozije tla u blizini od početnih koordinata.

Lijepo hodanje!

ENGLISH

This Earthcache will take you to a place of soil erosion on the island of Rab. This place is one of the fifteen points on the "Premuzic trail 1" of the Geopark RAB.

See more information about this trail:
http://www.tzg-rab.hr/ger/rab/geopark.php

To log the cache you will have to answer the following questions:

  1. Estimate the depth of hole caused by soil erosion near of the starting coordinates.
  2. Find traces of fossil roots and describe them (see information board on the waypoint)

Please take a photo of yourself in the place of the starting coordinates in front of the place of soil erosion (optional, not necessary for logging).

Send me an email with your answers to the four questions via my profile (in English please). There is no need to wait for a reply from us before logging your find. If anything is wrong, I will let you know.

Nice walking!
