Geocache Description:

Mission 66 was an intiative of the National Park Service started in 1956 to upgrade and expand visitor services. As part of this program architect Richard Neutra, and partners, designed a new Visitor Center for the Petrified Forest. Completed in 1963 it is the best example of Modern style architecture in the National Park Service. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2005, the complex is presently being restored to its original appearance.

For 100 years, the National Park Service has preserved America’s special places “for the enjoyment, education, and inspiration of this and future generations.” Celebrate its second century with the Find Your Park GeoTour that launched April 2016 and explore these geocaches placed for you by National Park Service Rangers and their partners.

This site holds an official geocache placed by the management of Petrified Forest National Park. It is not permissible for the public to place geocaches in a National Park.

The cache is located in what is called the 'orientation loop' of the park visitor center.  Signs and exhibits in this loop emphasize the sciences with prominent resources in the park such as paleontology, geology, archeology, and ecology. Park in the main parking area and proceed past the visitor center and restaurant to the central park plaza. From here enter the 'orientation loop' trail to find the cache. The cache is a small container but made easy to find to reduce impact to the area. The challenge of this cache is that the areas are frequented by muggles.  Please enjoy the exhibits on the trail.

This cache is only available during park operating hours.  The loop during operating hours even if the restaurant and visitor center buildings are closed.  Please do not wander into the housing or office areas as this is considered trespassing. Park only in the main parking lot and access the area only through the main plaza to avoid trespassing.

The visitor center and cache is accessible without having to pay the park entrance fee.
